Want Your Message to Resonate? Tell a Story!

Manta Tip of the Day:

Now and then you have to go back to the basics. And there’s nothing more basic than telling a story. A good story makes an impact. People remember a good story.

When messages (about anything) are introduced as a story, ears tend to perk up—and in business, complex brands, products or services become much more digestible when presented in a story format. While facts are impactful (and important), people are still moved by emotion.

Are you telling good stories?
■Begin with your goal and work toward the outcome.
■Identify your audiences, and speak directly to them.
■Find a connection and build from there.
■Be flexible. Your stories don’t have to stay the same—in fact, they should shift depending on the audience.
■Limit the details. Leave room for the audience to see themselves, an acquaintance or an experience within your story.
■Data and story can be an amazing partnership when combined in a meaningful way.

You want your messages to resonate, and storytelling is one approach that has proven itself over thousands of years. Sometimes it just doesn’t have to be so complicated, and it’s the familiar and comfortable that sticks.
